Now that the summer is well and truly behind us, this is the perfect time to get out into nature and soak up the warmth of the winter sun. With the intense heat gone and the rainy season no longer a worry, there are plenty of places close to Nelspruit where you can head out for the day and enjoy a picnic.
When you are planning your picnic adventure, one of the first things that you should do is to pack a picnic basket or to at least figure out more or less what you will want to take with you. The picnic basket staples include biscuits and chips, as well as dip, fruits and something to drink, but shopping around for that or having to bring along a picnic basket can be difficult when you are travelling. To make things easier, you can choose to order a picnic basket from one of the local restaurants offering such a service. To find out more about that, you can ask your lodge for suggestions or do a quick Google or Facebook search.
With your picnic bag packed, all you need is a place to tuck in, and we have some great suggestions for you.
- Witklip Dam
For a winter picnic, there is no better place to head to for your picnic than Witklip Dam, especially if you go out early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light is just perfect. And as the mists settle on the water, the scene is magical. There are pine forests all around the dam, and settling down on the shore is the best place for a picnic.
- Longmere Dam
The area around Nelspruit is full of exquisite dams and so another great place to have a picnic is at Longmere Dam, about 10 minutes outside of the sleepy village of White River. The dam is surrounded by swaying trees and there is plenty of place to lay down a picnic blanket and relax. - Pear Orchard
Up in the slow village of Kaapsehoop, the winter months are all about misty days, clear blue skies and air cold enough to take your breath away once the sun sets. It is also home to a couple of great picnic spots, including the Pear Orchard. With loads of trees around and a quiet stream, this is one of the best spots for a picnic.
- Horseshoe Falls
The town of Sabie is well-known for its waterfalls, with the Horseshoe Falls being among the most popular. These falls are absolutely beautiful and there is also tables set up here, which makes having a picnic a whole lot easier. If you want to do a spot of fishing, you can go to the Horseshoe Trout Farm, where there is also place to picnic.
